Abstract 15 Cooling of the skin has long been thought to be beneficial in pain states but 16 intense cold is clearly noxious. Does cooling lead to pain or gain? Rapid progress 17 in this controversy has been made since the discovery of specific ion channels of 18 the TRP family that are activated by cooling of sensory nerve cells to below body 19 temperature. This review focuses on the role of one of these, TRPM8, which has 20 been implicated in cool sensation and cold pain by recent knockout mouse 21 studies, but remarkably also appears capable of eliciting a novel analgesic gating 22 control over noxious inputs in chronic pain states. We discuss hypothetical 23 mechanisms that could bring about this composite profile. It is clear that new and 24 highly selective agents will need to be developed to further evaluate the potential 25 therapeutic opportunities offered by low temperature-sensitive TRP channels.

Effect evaluation of a heated ambulance mattress-prototype on thermal comfort and patients’ temperatures in prehospital emergency care – an intervention study

BACKGROUND The ambulance milieu does not offer good thermal comfort to patients during the cold Swedish winters. Patients' exposure to cold temperatures combined with a cold ambulance mattress seems to be the major factor leading to an overall sensation of discomfort. There is little research on the effect of active heat delivered from underneath in ambulance care. Therefore, the aim of this st...

Comparative study of the impact of heat transfer coefficient on the comfort conditions in the interior spaces of Iranian traditional houses (warm and dry climate of Yazd and cold and mountainous of Tabriz)

Paper undertakes software based numerical simulations in two different traditional houses in cold-dry climate of Tabriz and hot-arid climate of Yazd, The Eco Test software chosen for BIM simulations. Case study on real houses instead of hypothetical models can give more tangible results and choosing traditional houses can provide a good opportunity to compare both physical and thermal condition...

The effect of cold protective clothing on comfort and perception of performance.

The physiological properties of clothing designed to provide protection against cold, windy and damp conditions affect comfort. The weight, thickness, stiffness of the fabrics and friction between the clothing layers affect physical performance. The comfort and perception of performance associated with 3 military winter combat clothing systems from different decades (the new M05 system, the pre...

Regional differences in temperature sensation and thermal comfort in humans.

Sensations evoked by thermal stimulation (temperature-related sensations) can be divided into two categories, "temperature sensation" and "thermal comfort." Although several studies have investigated regional differences in temperature sensation, less is known about the sensitivity differences in thermal comfort for the various body regions. In the present study, we examined regional difference...
